FREELANCERS #27 - 04/03/24
Hello!

Hope you liked the Heavy Metal story last month. As usual, it turned out longer than expected, but it's fun to see the PAXs in action.
I have a short progress update, some funky jams, then more gushing about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Progress Update
I've finished outlining the first volume of Nexus 99 and will get started on the draft. I'll be leaning into the comedy, while aiming for a healthy amount of heart, since I feel that's my signature. My wife and I recently watched all of Only Murders In The Building, so I got a good example of how to write cozy mystery in recent memory. Highly recommend that show, by the way. Was way better than I expected.
I had a laugh to myself as I finished the outline when some callbacks practically wrote themselves and it all came together nicely. I'd like to hope it's my instincts and experience as a writer working as intended, but a more cynical side of me says it's just luck. Either way, I'm feeling good about what I have. This'll be tons of fun.
I'm keeping Phoenix Company Book 2 and some other projects cooking in the back of my mind, but I'll be aiming to finish the first draft of First Impressions (Working title for the first volume of Nexus 99) within the next few months. If all goes well, it'll be ready for release before the year is done.
I'll see how well it does before committing to more or moving on to something else. But very high likelihood I'll be diving back into Phoenix Company right after.
I love a good cover song. Metal remixes are usually my jam, but genre swaps that still vibe with the original are special. Here's a reggae cover of I'm Still Standing and, though not a cover, this synthy track by GUNSHIP is slick. Feel like it could find a nice spot in my Phoenix Company playlist I use while writing.
Let me know if you have any cool remixes/covers you'd like to share. Love hearing new jams.
Still plugging away at Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with stars in my eyes. There are some issues with pacing and it stumbled over key moments that hit real hard in the original, but I'm still loving it. Almost 70 hours in and I still have another 20-40 ahead of me to clear everything I want to clear. This is a lot denser than part 1. Hard to complain about too much goodness, though.
Recently reached Cosmo Canyon and the environments/visuals in this game absolutely blow my mind. This gave me similar vibes to seeing the Grand Canyon in real life. Got to that top of that observatory and just looked out the balcony marvelling at it all. Is always great when you see a place in a game/movie/show/book and think you'd love to be there.
There's a photo mode I've been using in the game to capture all these beautiful vistas and scenes (This one's from the internet). Might save them all to Google Drive and link them when I'm done.

Thanks very much for reading. I'll have the first chapter of Nexus 99's opening volume on the 15th. Have a good one.
